Tune Tuesday #9 – The Power of Goodbye

say-goodbye-french1Many of my friends are navigating the world of dating and romantic relationships. Within this past few weeks alone, I have heard stories around online dating, long distance relationships, heartbreak, new love, weird dates and break-ups and the long awaited apology.

Earlier this year, I had an unexpected experience that I didn’t know I needed. This experience completely surprised me, warmed my heart and I feel many people would benefit from such an experience. I have wanted to share this specific story for sometime, because I feel it is one that is somewhat rare, but needs to be told so that deeper healing can begin for others. It wasn’t until Sunday, that I felt a deeper desire to tell this story at this time. To get to that story we need to journey down a harder path and talk about break ups. Sigh.

No one likes break-ups but everyone has experienced one at some point. We have either initiated one or were the one that was let go. They are the price we pay for putting our heart on the line for love until we meet the person who accepts us in ways we don’t always accept ourselves.

This weeks song was challenging to select because there were so many contenders and I wanted to select the song with the perfect message. Of all my favorite break ups songs, today’s song speaks to the clarity we need to have and wisdom we gain, when we choose to end or walk away from a relationship that isn’t working. The Power of Goodbye came out in 1998, but it wasn’t until 2010 that I really heard it or even paid attention to the song. The line “Your heart is not open so I must go,” spoke to me in regards to a long term relationship I ended for the reason the song states. It was at that time that the song offered the language that validated my feelings in relation to a break up at that time that left me speechless and hurt for a long time. At points in our life, though hard, we must learn to say goodbye.

“The Power Of Good-Bye”

Your heart is not open so I must go
The spell has been broken, I loved you so
Freedom comes when you learn to let go
Creation comes when you learn to say noYou were my lesson I had to learn
I was your fortress you had to burn
Pain is a warning that something’s wrong
I pray to God that it won’t be long
Do ya wanna go higher?[Chorus:]There’s nothing left to try
There’s no place left to hide
There’s no greater power
Than the power of good-byeYour heart is not open so I must go
The spell has been broken, I loved you so
You were my lesson I had to learn
I was your fortress

[Chorus2:]

There’s nothing left to lose
There’s no more heart to bruise
There’s no greater power
Than the power of good-bye

Learn to say good-bye
I yearn to say good-bye

[chorus, substituting “no more places” for “no place left”]
[chorus2]
