Tune #40 – Be What Tomorrow Needs

Tomorrow is TUESDAY and not like any other Tuesday. It’s election day.

My stomach is in knots. After a group meditation last week, my heart dropped as I heard two women say that they would not vote because they didn’t want to make a choice between the two main presidential candidates.

I’ve been meditating a lot on my ancestors and it’s making me think of all ancestors and all people that have walked before us.

We must lift up our ancestors and pay tribute to the sacrifices they made for us to be here. We must honor the people who fought to give us the right to vote as a country, as well as the women who suffered to give women the right to vote and the people of color who, through non-violence gave people of color the right to vote and be heard.

To honor our ancestors, we must vote.

This election has not divided the country, it has just put light to the division that has existed within our communities.

At one time, we thought separate, but equal was the way, but learned that we were mistaken. We are working together to be one nation, but how we decide to be one nation, is what is at steak.

For unity to be possible it needs to come from a place of love. There should not exist an us versus them mentality. People need to feel like they belong here regardless of their ethnicity, language, sexuality or religion. People, who have been historically silent or silenced, need to know they are welcome to the table to speak, know that they will be heard and their words considered.

This blog is called the Illuminated Voice because I am using my voice in ways that I once silenced. I am putting light on our truths. I know my story is not unique to me, it’s a common thred I find among the people I have met and continue to meet.

Today’s tune speaks to the voice story of everyone.

“You’ve got to make a choice, if the music drowns you out. And raise your voice every single time, they try and shut your mouth.”

Use your voice where ever you go. Speak with love to build yourself and others up. Vote from a place of love and hope.

And… “Be what tomorrow needs.”

SING by My Chemical Romance

Sing it out
Boy, you’ve got to see what tomorrow brings
Sing it out
Girl, you’ve got to be what tomorrow needs

For every time that
They want to count you out
Use your voice every single time
You open up your mouth

Sing it for the boys, sing it for the girls
Every time that you lose it, sing it for the world
Sing it from the heart, sing it ’til you’re nuts
Sing it out for the ones that’ll hate your guts

Sing it for the deaf, sing it for the blind
Sing about everyone that you left behind
Sing it for the world, sing it for the world

Sing it out
Boy, they’re gonna sell what tomorrow means
Sing it out
Girl, before they kill what tomorrow brings

You’ve got to make a choice
If the music drowns you out
And raise your voice every single time
They try and shut your mouth

Sing it for the boys, sing it for the girls
Every time that you lose it, sing it for the world
Sing it from the heart, sing it ’til you’re nuts
Sing it out for the ones that’ll hate your guts

Sing it for the deaf, sing it for the blind
Sing about everyone that you left behind
Sing it for the world, sing it for the world

Cleaned up, corporation progress
Dying in the process
Children that can talk about it

Living on the railways
People moving sideways
Sell it ’til your last days
Buy yourself the motivation

Generation nothing
Nothing but a dead scene
Product of a white dream
I am not the singer that you wanted but a dancer

I refuse to answer
Talk about the past sir
Rooting for the ones
Who want to get away

Keep running!

We’ve got to see what tomorrow brings
Sing it for the world, sing it for the world
Yeah, you got to be what tomorrow needs
Sing it for the world, sing it for the world.
